Xenoblade Chronicles and Perseverance: Tough Bosses

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D has to be the hardest game I have ever played. I had to retry the entire game 3 times in order to get grinding and quests right. The first time I made way too many mistakes and ended up being very underleveled for all boss fights. I decided to retry again a couple years later, but loss\t interest. The third time I decided to try again, I had forgotten everything about the game so I decided to begin a fresh save. Now I am finally at the final boss. I actually managed to do pretty well with this game except for two bosses which taught me about patience and strategy.

Gadolt

This was the first boss that I ran into major problems with. Usually after doing most of the side quests, I could easily take a boss down, but not this one. He is also apparently one of the hardest bosses in the game which is how I got the achievement Phoenix for 50 game overs total (a good chunk was from him and also Metal Face).

The first thing I did was grind by doing all side quests to try to get closer to his level. That helped me a lot, but he still was hard. He’s a hard enough boss with his deadly attacks (I can still remember hearing “This shot will take you down” before he basically killed most of my party). So I looked on YouTube and also at posts by others who were stuck on the fight.

After trying to use different party members, I believe I won using either Shulk or Melia with Reyn and Sharla. Sharla healed everyone while I took out the guardians and eventually just kept knocking Gadolt out until the fight was over.

Disciple One

This one had me wanting to quit the game. She is known to be the hardest boss in this game. She summons enemies that grant her 100% defense against physical attack unless you take most of them down. On top of that she has powerful attacks and also she is a large boss in a small area surrounded by toxic ether. She can push your party members and you into the toxic ether just by moving around. I died here more than Gadolt and was very annoyed by hearing “You will pay for your insolence” several times during this fight.

Looking up help for this one was actually funny. It would go between helpful advice to hearing that people just quit the game at this point because of how tough she is. I just grinded until she was not in the yellow (yellow means that the boss is slightly harder because your party is too low).

Then, I just kept trying different party combinations. I eventually just used Melia, Riki, and Sharla because two of those mostly attacked using ether instead of physical attacks. It was basically luck that got me to win because I used chain attacks to take her down. If I wasn’t lucky she would take Melia out which would cause me to lose the battle fairly quickly.

Lessons Learned

I learned that with patience, strategy, and trying multiple times, I can do anything! I really learned about patience when I needed to wait a while to do quests and grind before I could fight a boss. I also learned strategy with choosing the right party that went could help each other out, making sure they had the right equipment with gems to increase certain stats, and making sure they had the right Arts selected. After I tried multiple strategies I would eventually defeat any boss.

I am currently stuck on the final boss who has three phases, but I managed to get through the first phase. I am using what I have learned to defeat the final boss!

Importance of Bonds in Xenoblade Chronicles

I am currently working through Xenoblade Chronicles 3D on my Nintendo 3DS. I have now played 99 and a half hours and I still need to complete the main story. This game is long! While playing I have come across two main theme I wanted to write about. The first being about love and relationships and the second one I will write later once I have finished the game. The second theme requires more story in order to discuss it properly. Warning: Full spoilers up until the Gadolt boss battle where I stopped.

Party Relationship

The standard for any RPG is usually some form of party. This game has a special mechanic were the more you sync up with your party with attacks, the more a link for fills up. Once this link fills up, you can do chain attacks. You also need to encourage your teammates in battle when they get discouraged. During battle, team mates will cheer each other on like “We can definitely do this”. Battle also encourages skill links which create special effects during battle such as an Agility buff when the battle begins with higher level enemies.

There’s also Heart-to-Hearts which unlock special cut scenes from a character’s affinity link. Affinity links are basically how much they get along which increases as they battle together.

In terms, of story the party generally bonds as the story progresses. You see Reyn and Shulk, the first main party, deepen their friendship as they work to save Bionis. Sharla, a woman who joins when you meet Colony 6, and Reyn get closer along the story as well. Reyn clearly likes Sharla and tries to bond with her which she does find adorable.

Family Bonds

Family is also an important part of Xenoblade. Dunban and Fiora are brother and sister who look after each other. Fiora nurses Dunban back to health after he injures himself wielding the Monado and he looks after her when she gets a Mechonis body and needs to stay hydrated.

Melia has a brother named Kallian and a father named Emperor Sorean. Melia is very close with her family. She loves her father and her brother looks after her. When Sorean dies, Melia is devastated. She is made the new leader of the High Entia, but asks her brother to stand in for her while she accompanies Shulk to fight the Mechon.

A bond that has become tense over time is Miqol and Egil. Miqol is the father of Egil. Egil is, at the moment, responsible for the tension between the Homs and Machina. He has led the Mechonis to fight and kill the Homs. Miqol does not want the Homs to die over past history and is currently tell Shulk to kill Egil. We’ll see if this changes over time.

Community Bonds

During any time in the game, you can look at the Affinity Chart which shows your relationship to the different communities in Xenoblade Chronicles. My highest community is Central Bionis which is at 3 stars. This is where the Nopon live.

During Xenoblade you come across different communities. These can be other Homs communities like Colony 6 or other races such as Nopon (basically sentient fluffy creatures), High Entia (similar to elves in intelligence and life span), and Machina (the machine people). Some of these are even added to your party.

Nopon can seem annoying at first, but Riki is kind and determined to help his friends. His moves can even help friends like healing. Melia is a High Entia. At first, they seem like they only care about themselves, but they do decided to help the Homs. Melia uses magic to either hurt enemies or give her allies buffs. The Machina really want to stop Egil and are willing to help the Homs. All they want is peace.

Romantic Bonds

The first romantic bond is Shulk and Fiora. They are friends that are clearly interested in each other. Before they can form a romantic bond, Fiora is killed by a Mechon. This drives Shulk to want to destroy all Mechon. He doesn’t change his mind until he sees Fiora in a Mechon’s body. This Mechon behaves strangely because the Mechon clearly knows how Fiora feels about Shulk and decides to protect them. In fact, the Mechon destroys itself protecting Shulk.

After Fiora has been released from the Mechon, her and Shulk kiss beginning the romance they were too nervous to start at first. Fiora is actually nervous about the possibility of becoming fully human again because she desperately wants to help Shulk when he is fighting. She also is originally afraid that Shulk wouldn’t want a relationship with her now that she is part Mechon, but he just loves having her in his life again.

The other major romantic bond is between Sharla and Gadolt. Sharla and Gadolt were in love and had a close bond together. She tried to console Gadolt during the war against the Mechon. Gadolt went missing during battle and was perceived to be dead. Turns out he is alive, but one major problem. He is a Mechon and this time he has no memories of his past. After Fiora turned rogue from her memories and Mumkhar’s obsession with Dunban led to his demise, Egil decided that completely erasing memories, thus erasing bonds, would ensure that his next legion of Homs-Mechons would be even better warriors. Sharla is devastated that Gadolt no longer remembers her and that their bond has dissolved. But, it seems he may remember her because he purposefully misses her when he attacks the party.

Future Bonds

I am hoping that Sharla and Gadolt will have a mended bond. I am hoping that there is some way to regain his memories. I am also interested to see how Shulk and Fiora’s relationship will deepen now that they are together again. I also am hoping that there might be some way to stop Egil without killing him. Maybe if they get through to him that destroying another race will not help him with the pain of his past, he’ll stop this violence. That one unfortunately I think is the least likely outcome.

What are your thoughts on the bonds in this game? Maybe there is another game you can think of that focuses heavily on bonds.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses Update and Alternative Route

I just got back into Fire Emblem: Three Houses last weekend after my friends playing it made me miss the game. It turns out that I was actually getting close to a major reveal so I am glad I decided to finish the game! I just started the alternative route before starting this post so I can also discuss it on this post!

Student Update

All of my students are now extremely helpful in battle since they have Master classes. Edelgard is a Warrior so she can solely use her axe in battle. Hubert is a Warlock whose focus is using dark magic in battle to defeat enemies. Ferdinand is a Wyvern Rider who uses an axe on a wyvern so he can fly and take out enemies. This also makes him incredibly strong. Lindhardt is a Bishop so he can use some offensive magic, but he mostly focuses on healing. Caspar is a Grappler who uses his fists in battle and can do multiple damage to an enemy. Bernadetta is a Sniper. She does not like fighting so it works that she just hits people far away with her bow. Dorothea is my Dancer which gives her really good offensive magic like Meteor, but also allows her to heal allies. Petra is an Assassin which allows her to use both her sword and bow in battle. She is my strongest fighter because she deals a lot of damage with her sword. Finally, my character, Azura, is the Enlightened One. I fused with the goddess so I now can heal, use magic damage, and use my sword in battle.

Story

All of the big reveals started happening while I was playing so spoiler warning! First, I found out that the gentle librarian was actually Solon who wants to use dark magic. He can turn students into beasts and also massacres your home village.

Then, another betrayal happens. The sweet red-head student you don’t teach in the Black Eagles named Monica is actually this evil woman, who kinda resembles a mad clown, called Kronya. Considering that Monica was kidnapped by the Death Knight, it is possible that Monica actually died and Kronya is merely pretending to be her. Kronya kills Jeralt and then attempts to kill you as well.

This is when another reveal happens, although I saw this one coming. Solon uses his powers to send you to a dark realm which reminded me of Kingdom Heart 3‘s World of Darkness except there are no landscapes here. That’s when it is revealed that the green lady in your head is actually a goddess. You fuse with her to escape and gain a new class!

You then sit on the throne because Rhea wants you to and  find out that Edelgard is the Flame Emperor and she tries to stop Rhea. This goes into why I chose the alternative path.

I just don’t trust Rhea. She executes anyone who resists her. I found out that when my character was born, her mother died and the baby was abnormal and had no heartbeat. Rhea admits that she put the goddess inside of me. I’m guessing that means that the baby and the mother were supposed to die during childbirth so Rhea saved the baby by infusing her with the goddess. She probably really only did that because she wanted the goddess back on earth.

Alternative Route

It started around the beginning of month 2 when I approached Edelgard and she asked me to accompany her. She traveled to see her father so she could officially become Emperor. She uses her power to get rid of the Prime Minister who tortured her so she could get two crests.

She then uses this power to summon an army. She reveals herself as the Flame Emperor during the battle in the Goddess Tower. After defeating her, I had a choice to save her. When I did that, I really made Rhea angry. So angry in fact, that she turned into a giant Dragon called The Immaculate One. So turns out the demure goddess was actually a terrifying dragon. This means that she was hiding her true nature. So I am grateful I was able to choose this route.

After fleeing the scene, I am now at a hideaway with Edelgard. I was locked out of all school activities since I was no longer working there, but I can still interact with the students. Since Edelgard lives, she is planning an attack on Rhea and asking all kingdoms to join her. She is detailing all Rhea has done so the people will turn on her. I started the battle and defeated Rhea. I got to the time skip and I am now back at the school with the students.

Coming Towards the Finale

I am really looking forward to see the alternative route! I hope to defeat Rhea as I do not want her leading Fodlan. I am glad I went with the alternative route first and I plan to do the normal route afterwards. I just wanted to side with Edelgard because I trust her more than Rhea! I also spend so much time with Dorothea that a romance option came up so I’ll have to see what happens after the war is over!

Have you chosen the alternative route for The Black Eagles? Do you trust Edelgard or Rhea more?

Why I Love RPGs

Photo by Rene Asmussen on Pexels.com

My first RPG was Pokemon Red, although I remember more from Pokemon FireRed. I got back into RPGs when I bought a Nintendo 3DS and got Pokemon YThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. I am currently playing Dragon Quest XI S so I decided to talk about why I love RPGs so much.

Setting

The settings are usually fantasy based so I get to explore beautifully designed locations. The setting also tends to be massive because RPGs tend to be long which means that I get to explore different environments.

A great example of this is Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. First, the whole settings is basically on two beings that fought with each other then froze in time and people now live on them. Then, the setting itself has beautiful worlds such as Eryth Sea. The water is a clear crystal blue and I love how this sea has floating islands you walk across.

Characters

RPGs typically have a party. I love meeting new party members and seeing what their skills are. I also like bonding with these characters in the game. You generally are spending several hours with these characters so you get attached to them.

Persona 5 has a party that you get close to as you learn more about them. You become like a family to each other, hanging out together and bonding. The game also emphasizes bonds so you want to get closer to your party members as well as supporting characters in the game.

Right now, my favorite party member is Erik from Dragon Quest XI S. I just find him to be really funny and appreciate that he just goes along for the ride to help your character.

Enemies

You level up by fighting enemies in RPGs. I love fighting enemies because I appreciate looking at the different designs of the enemies. Each game also has different styles to their enemies such as Persona 5‘s style being different from Dragon Quest XI S’s style.

I also like the strategy involved because generally enemies might have different types like maybe they have fire attacks so you need to hit them with ice attacks.

My favorite enemy designs are from Kingdom Hearts games because the Heartless are really adorable. I love the different designs for the Heartless!

Bosses

There are many bosses in RPGs and there is always one major boss at the end. I love seeing the different boss designs in games and I love how you need to really strategize to defeat them especially the final boss.

Legend of Zelda games uses dungeon bosses to prepare you for the final boss. There are usually two bosses per dungeon, a mini boss and the major boss of the dungeon. These bosses get more and more difficult as you get different items, but they prepare you for the final fight which usually involves fighting Ganondorf.

Plot

JRPGS are very long so I love the journey! Plots differ between each game, but they usually consists of main quests and side quests. Main quests are what you need to do to complete the game whereas side quest swill give you experience and optional story.

The general story usually involves something about a chosen hero going on a journey, but not all RPGS follow that formula.

Horizon Zero Dawn follows the typical RPG formula because only Aloy can protect her people from the threat of the robots growing stronger.

Extras

Every hero needs a break from fighting! Sometimes RPGS have extra things you can do for fun like fishing or taking pictures or races.

Final Fantasy XV  has a fishing mini game, photography, Chocobo races, and a festival that allows players to take a break from the story and have some extra fun! I like fishing minigames despite not having a desire to actually learn fishing in real life.

Favorite RPGS

Now that I have listed why I love RPGS, I want to end with some of my favorite RPG games so here’s my list. I am only listing games I have completed so some games like Xenoblade Chronicles 3D have been left off

  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Persona 5
  • Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 Remix
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Assassin Creed Odyssey
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

What do you like about RPGS and what is your favorite RPG?

The Brink of Gaming’s Comparison of RPG to Life

How many times have you felt stuck in life? If you’re anything like me, the answer is probably uncomfortably often. Even when we know what our days have in store for us, it is an easy thing to tumble off the path and lose sight of exactly where we are heading. Even the destinations within […]

via The RPG Quests of Life — The Brink of Gaming

The Brink of Gaming wrote this wonderful post comparing RPGs to real life. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this! RPGs are my favorite video game genre and they can remind me of life. The Persona games come to mind because they are all about balancing social life and creating bonds while going through the main quest! There are also side quests along the way to gain more experience and things to do throughout the day that raise your character’s stats. Enjoy The Brink of Gaming’s post by clicking on the link here!

Fire Emblem Update!

I am slowly making progress through Fire Emblem: Three Houses! I am really enjoying the story and teaching!

Story

I have stopped someone who was building up an army against the monastery. There is a plot to murder the high priestess Rhea and we are to guard her.

Teaching

Some of my students have reached level 5 and have done certification exams.

Others have asked me to change their goals and I have accepted all changes so far. Linhardt wants to be a Bishop, Hubert wants to focus on ranged spells, and Petra wants to do up close combat and also use use bows.

I have done another group task with Fernidand and Petra to begin to learn how to fly and it has been going well! I am not sure where I want Fernidand to ride or fly which is why I have been switching him between the two group tasks.

Bonding

Characters have started to form bonds which have unlocked Support conversations. I have increased my bonds with Bernadette and Dorthea through combat. Others have increased their bonds through combat, outside activities, or group tasks.

I am hoping to have my character get a C rank with all the characters before Chapter 1 is done, but I am specifically focusing on getting Edelgard to a C rank since she is the house leader. It has proven to be difficult even though I have been putting her in combat near me and have also done activities with her. Hopefully by the end of Chapter 1 I will eventually have a C rank with Edelgard!

Next Fire Emblem Game

I have decided that my next Fire Emblem game will be Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. It started with me finding a random GIF of a Fire Emblem character and showing it to my friend. I found out this was Camilla from the  Fire Emblem: Fates series.

It was at first really confusing because Fates consists of three games. I did not know which one to start with. Because I took an interest in Camilla, I decided to go with Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. My friend has played this game so he offered to help me with strategy if I got stuck.

I am interested in the story of this game because it has something to do with your main character trying to choose between two kingdoms. I chose the kingdom where you were born. It is also apparently the harder game, but I play on easy so it should not be too bad!

How are you all doing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses? What do you think of the game so far?

My First Fire Emblem Game; Fire Emblem: Three Houses

I decided to try Fire Emblem: Three Houses mainly due to a friend’s recommendation. My close friend is a huge fan of the Fire Emblem games. When I saw this game, I was intrigued by the story and the three houses concept. I liked the idea of being a teacher; it reminded me of Hogwarts and I am a huge Harry Potter fan! Here are my thoughts on the game!

Story So Far

The three houses come together to teach their students different styles of combat. You are offered a teaching position there after you aid the three leaders of the houses in combat and save Edelgard. I am currently on the first month where my mission will be to fight bandits.

Character Customization

I was surprised that there is some minor character customization! I knew about choosing the gender of my character, but I was also able to pick my character’s name. I decided that Azura would be a great name for my character and it reminds of the daedric princess in Skyrim!

I was also able to pick my birthday! I could have chosen my actual birthday but I liked the idea of the Pegasus moon because I love Pegasus so I chose February!  I enjoyed that I was able to add some personal touch to my character!

Houses

There are three houses to choose from. I went with The Black Eagles. They are known for their history as being the oldest empire. They are also magic users which I loved and I also loved their leader, Edelgard!

The second house I liked was The Blue Lions. They appear to be mainly knights and they fight more close combat. Their leader is Prince Dimitri Blaiddyd.

The last house called The Golden Deer was the youngest and does not have many nobles. This house stuck out the most to me when I saw the trailers. I liked that they followed their own rules. Claude was interesting when I met him since he was more informal than the other house leaders. They specialize in ranged combat which is why I chose not to go with their house. I thought magic could give me up close and ranged combat.

Teachers

I have met three teachers so far. Manuela is interesting so far. She seems to love the spotlight. I also like that she has a flexible career. She is a teacher, a doctor, and a singer (or songstress as they are referred to in this game). I am interested in learning more about her as a character!

Hanneman knows about crests! He seems very knowledgeable and I would love to learn more from him! I hope he can teach more about crests throughout the game! I am also interested in why my crest is unique.

Jeritza is responsible for combat training. He is aloof for now. He does not appear to like conversation. I hope that I can learn more about him throughout the game. For now, he does not really want to talk to me!

Black Eagle Students

Some of these students I know more than others, but I hope to learn more about each of them soon!

Edelgard

Edelgard is the leader and also a student. She is next in line to rule the Adrestian Empire. She seems like she is trying to fit in as a student despite her prestige.

Hubert

Hubert is loyal to Edelgard. He wants to protect her. He appears to also be aloof, but not as bad as Jeritza. I am hoping that he will connect with the other students as well because connection is important for teamwork.

Dorothea

Dorothea is also a songstress. I have not spent too much time with her. What’s most interesting about her is that she is the only commoner in this house. She is known for her singing and she appears to be really sweet! She is a magic user so I hope to increase her magic and hopefully she can learn healing magic.

Ferdinand

I have not spent much time with them. He is a noble and acts like one with his manners. I do believe I gave him a team riding class and he did good. I think I may give him more riding lessons. Maybe he might be a good knight considering he reminds me of Prince Dimitiri of the Blue Lions. He is good with a lance so that would also make him a good knight.

Bernadetta

I have taken a liking to her and really want to help her! She is very shy so she reminds me of me as a kid. I did put her out into combat during the battle against the houses to help build confidence. I’m hoping that she will gain confidence through my teachings!

Caspar

Funny enough I keep thinking his name is Casper because the blue hair reminds me of Casper the ghost! He is way over confident! I am hoping he will mature throughout the game. Right now, every time he sees me, he wants to fight me because he think he can beat me! We’ll see about that. I did put him in one battle and he needs to work on his axe so I am hoping to make him a better fighter.

Petra

I love her violet hair! She has a really cool character design! She is the talk of the game so far due to her eye tattoo. She is really good with a sword as I also had her fight against the three houses. I love that she already does a double attack! She has a slight language barrier where she does mess up phrases, but she is really trying to learn the language! I hope to see her improve in up close combat with more powerful attacks!

Linhardt

I’m not sure what to say about him yet. He comes across as lazy and seems to prefer naps. I’m hoping that I can encourage him to be more studious and help him grow as a character! He also does really well with offensive magic so I hope I can teach him more offensive spells.

Combat

This was originally my least favorite part going into the game. I was not really sure I would like the style of combat with the movement squares and the top down perspective. However, I found that I really enjoy it!

I like that there are different types of terrain which helps me in combat. When you move to a square, you can see if the enemy can attack you. You can also view the whole map to plan out what you are going to do.

I like that there is a forecast on how my attacks will go so I can plan out my attack. I am really enjoying the strategy of the game. I also like the durability aspect so I am discouraged from constantly using combat arts. Combat arts do more damage, but take down the durability of a weapon.

Teaching

I also saw a little bit of the teaching. I was able to do one lesson so I experimented. Your teacher level determines how many students you can teach at a time.  You can plan out which skills you want to improve. The group teaching allows two students to bond and also figure out a skill like horseback riding. I had Ferdinand and Edelgard do horseback riding. They did good, but it would have gotten better if they knew each other more. But, by the end of the week they did have a perfect score!

Students can also take tests to change classes and you can also do seminars for your character to raise skills!

Activities

Fishing

Fishing was a mini game that was simple and fun. You can get fish for food for the dining hall. I was able to do it once as a tutorial

Gardening

You can grow and cultivate plants for further recipes. I like that there is a relaxing section with gardening, but I do wish you could see your garden.

Dining

You can choose you to dine with your students. This allows you to bond with students and increase their motivation. I like that you can see the delicious food and can spend time with your students.

Singing

Another way to bond with students. Two students can sing together. I chose Dorothea because she loves to sing and it would improve her Faith magic.

What do I think of Fire Emblem now?

I really love this game so far and can see why it is such a beloved series! I cannot wait to see more of the game and maybe I will try other Fire Emblem games after this one! Overall, I am really impressed with the game and I enjoy how much strategy is involved with the game!

What do you think of Fire Emblem: Three Houses so far? Let me know in the comments!
